THE BEST SEA TROUT FISHING IN THE WORLD

Fly fishing on the Rio Grande in Argentina

The success of fishing on the Rio Grande is a modern-day Cinderella tale. In just ten years, through strict controls and the consistent pursuit of a catch & release policy, the average catch quotas have risen rapidly: catches per person from less than one fish per day in the early 1980s to several fish per day. Today the Rio Grande is considered to be the world’s most productive sea trout fishery.

FLY FISHING AT THE END OF THE WORLD

Fly fishing for the largest sea trout in the world

The Rio Grande runs from east to west, from the Andes to the Atlantic, and 70 km through Argentina. The landscape of Tierra del Fuego is reminiscent of Wyoming or the Scottish ‘flow country’ It is a sparsely populated wild landscape. Large sheep farms share the land with herds of wild lama-like guanacos, red foxes, and condors.

RIO GRANDE ARGENTINA

Fly fishing on the Rio Grande

Details

The Rio Grande is considered to be the best sea trout river in the world and the Kau Tapen Lodge is one of the best lodges in the world. Two superlatives that will not disappoint, as both the fishing and the accommodation are world class. Built in 1984, the Kau Tapen Lodge was designed to offer its guests maximum comfort during their fishing trip while at the same time providing easy access to the pools. Up to 10 people can be accommodated in single rooms. A large living area offers a view of the Menendez and Rio Grande valleys and a small fishing shop is available.

The food at Kau Tapen Lodge is also first class. The Kau Tapen Lodge offers wonderful dishes with regional meat specialties, fresh vegetables and delicious desserts. A traditional asado (BBQ) will take place during your stay, where you can try different types of meat as well as salads. Of course, the wine selection is huge and already included in the weekly price. The first brown trout in Tierra del Fuego were stocked by John Goodall in 1935. Trout eggs were transported by ship from Puerto Montt in Chile – 60,000 Salmo trutta eggs survived the strenuous journey and were then populated in the two rivers Candelaria and McLennan. Both are tributaries of the Rio Grande.

These brown trout (sea trout) migrating into the sea now complete the migration cycle, typical of salmonids, and spawn in freshwater during late summer / autumn. The young sea trout grow up in the river for a period of 1 to 4 years before they migrate into the sea for the first time. In the sea, the sea trout eat and grow for a period of at least 6 months before they return to their river for the first time, weighing now around 3kg. Scientists have studied trout that spawned more than 6 times! A sea trout that has already gone through 4 migration cycles can weigh over 10 kg. The frequency with which the trout return is an indicator that the fish have few enemies to fear. But this also documents a successful “catch and release” policy.

Nowhere in the world is the chance better than on the Rio Grande of landing a sea trout over the magical 10 kg mark and most of the world records come from the Rio Grande. Daily catches of several sea trout are more the rule than the exception.
