Our week 24 ended up with 58 fish, which is a great number of fish for an early June week. All fish which have been caught during the week have been in an excellent condition, absolutely bright, just perfect June Gaula salmon.
After our start meeting at 8 p.m. the new fishing week began and all fishermen who just arrived could not await to do their first casts. Our regular guest Arve Nilsen, who comes every year with his party of Norwegian fly fishers from the Bergen area repeated his last year catch!!! Just after a few casts fishing our Beat B2 he hooked a fish on a Black & Silver tube fly. Arve told us it has been a great fight and he could not believe himself that the story of last year is repeated almost similar. This time his beautiful cock fish weighted in with 15,2 kg (33 ½ lb)!! Last year he caught his personal record fish just 500 meter up streams in our beat B1, it weighed 15,6 kg (34 lb ) – please see our 2007 season report. The pictures say more than 1000 words….
16th of June- a slower day on our water…

On Monday the 16th the Swedish author Pelle Klippinge arrived and fished our Beat B1 for a couple of hours and caught a salmon measuring 87 cm and weighing approx. 6 kg (13 lb) on a Sunray Shadow tube fly. Pelle released the fish carefully.

… a beautifull tail-fin….
|
The night temperature has dropped a lot and we had a cold night of just 6 degrees here in Støren and the water level on the Froset gauge dropped to 70 cm, that means that there is only a further drop of 10 cm needed to slow the runs of fish somewhat down and than the salmon will become better takers. But if we get rain again, the yo-yo like up and down of the water level will continue and makes fishing more difficult.
We also got a report from our Bogen Søndre Beat where David Foreman caught a salmon of 11,2kg / 24.7 lb at 2 o’clock in the night morning.
We are proud of our high release quote of 65,07 % until now, which might be the highest in the whole of Norway. Even if June Gaula salmon have a superior taste and are exceptionally valuable food – our fishermen release most fish on our Beats!

During the early morning NFC’s Daniel Stephan was been lucky and caught 2 nice salmon on our Free for All water at a water level of 65 cm at the Frøseth Gauge, the first fish at 1 o’clock was estimated to weigh approx. 5kg (11lb) and somewhat later he caught a second fish of approx. 8 kg (17.5 lb). Daniel released both salmon carefully. He caught the fish on a mid-sized „Thunder & Lightning“ tube fly.
As well in the morning Masato Aoki from Japan, who fishes his eight season with us, caught his first fish of the week on our Beat D2. His salmon measuring 90 cm, which must have had a weight of approx. 7 kg (15.5 lb) was carefully released.
At 11 a.m. Chris Henshaw caught the first Grilse caught this season on our water. It weighed in at 2,2 kg (5 lb) and was covered in sea lice and took his Green Highlander tube on our Lower Gaula Beat E1. At the moment there are only 4 grilse caught on the Gaula so far.
In the afternoon Fabrice Bergues from France hooked again a salmon on our Free for All water. He estimated the weight to be approx 11,5 kg (25 lb). Fabrice released the fish carefully. We hope to show you his fight in a video clip shortly. During the early morning Fabrice lost after a fabulous battle a very big fish in our Beat B2, after 25 min fight the leader broke unfortunately.

Also Pelle Klippinge was successful again. He hooked a nice salmon of approx 12 kg (26.5 lb) on a Thunder & Lightning tube fly on our Beat C1 and released the fish after a good fight.
On our Bogen Søndre Beat Michael Walsh from Ireland caught a nice fish of 10,0kg (22.5 lb) on a Silver Grey tube fly and a fish of approx. 5.2 kg (11.5 lb) has been caught during the night before from Steve O’ Dea of the "Donegal Fly-Company" on a Black Green Sunray Shadow..
In the late evening it started to rain heavily and the water began to rise.

18th of June – rising water on the Gaula
|
21.06.2008 18:32
|
|
During the last night it rained very strong, also up in the mountains, so the water level of the Gaula rose during the night from 60cm at the Frøset Gauge up to 110 cm in the morning of the 18th of June.
As the water stopped to rise it was Fabrice Bergues who saw the big chance of catching of fish now on our Beat D1. During the first 2 hours he has not seen a fish, but suddenly salmon showed up everywhere, he said he has never seen so many salmon in this pool. Also very big fish were „head & tailing“ all over the place. It did not take a long time until he hooked a fish on a Phatakorva tube fly. The fresh salmon weighted in with 6,8 kg (15 lb) and was sealiced.

At 5.40 p.m. Donald Mowat was able to release a salmon of approx. 8,5 kg (18.5 lb) on our Beat C2. The fish took a Black & Green“ tube fly.
Later on the evening Johannes Kahrs fished our Beat B2 and caught a salmon of approx. 7,5 kg (16.5 lb) which he carefully released.
The water is still dropping slowly, but it is dropping, so we expect some new catches for today, as many fish has been seen moving last night. Also from Gaulfossen we gotreports that a lot of salmon have moved upstream. It is just a question of time when they will reach our pools in the Støren area.

19th of June – rising water but still nice catches
|

|
During the last day the water rose to a level of 90cm at the Frøset Gauge, so we expected some catches after the rise. I did not take a long time and the first fish was registered in our statistics. Frederico Malipiero from Italy was able to release a smaller salmon of approx. 3,5kg (7.5lb) on our Beat D1. On his next rotation pool in Beat B2 he was lucky again and could land a beautyfull fish of 10.5kg (23 lb).

Also on our Bogen Søndre Beat a salmon of 9.3kg (20.5 lb) has been landed. Rocky Moran from Ireland caught the fish on our Beat BS1. Regular rod Dr. Wolfgang Spaete from Germany caught a salmon of 7,0kg on our Beat B1 on a Green Butt tube fly. Rune Jensen from Norway has been successful on the very same pool and was able to land a salmon of 9.2kg (20 lb).
Fabrice Bergues from France has been successful again on beat C1, he released a salmon of approx 7kg (15.5 lb). Fabrice and his friends are always providing good photographs…just have a look…

During the night our Norwegian guests Jon Anders Schei and Jostein Ueland where fishing our Beat D1 – and it should be an exiting adventure….
|

|
Jostein hooked a fish in the middle of the pool, and the fish just turned and went out of the pool - down through the white water rapids and the Gauntlet below Beat D1. After the fish took in the hard current more than 300 meters of backing his friend Jon Anders finally could land the salmon of 8,3kg (18 lb). Everyone who has gone down the Gauntlet and landed a fish 500m down streams has managed a masterpiece in fishing. There are few experiences in salmon fishing which make as happy as a successful run through the Gauntlet.
|

During taking the photographs they saw several more fish showing in the pool, so it was Jon Anders’ turn. Just after some casts he lost a fish, and a little bit further down he hooked another fish – this time he was able to land the salmon which weighted in at 7,2kg (16 lb).

Also his friend Yngve Landro has fortunately been successful on our Lower Gaula Beat E1. Yngve’s fish weighted in at 9,2kg (20 lb).
Simon Kitcher has caught the first fish of the season on our Upper Gaula Beat on a Black & Green Highlander tube fly. The first Upper Gaula salmon was caught in the lowest pool of that beat, called Reithølen. I was weighed in at 4,0 kg (9 lb).
As many salmon have run the Gaula up streams we think the fishing on our Upper Gaula Beat will be soon improving with a chance to catch a very big fish. It will be exciting to see the results in this beat from next week onwards.

The waterlevel on the Froseth Gauge on the morning of the 21st showed 85cm, which means the water dropped slowly during the night. The water temperature has been measured with 11,7 degrees.
On the morning we have seen in our statistics that 2 more fish have been caught late in the evening. Fabrice Bergues and his friend Frederic Andre were again successful in Beat D1. Frederic Andre was able to release a salmon of approx. 10kg (22 lb).

Early in the morning Donald Mowat caught a salmon on our Beat C2. The fish weighted at 8,0 kg (17.5 lb).
The biggest salmon of the week so far has been caught by our first time visitor Takeshi Iwamori who is living in Canada. Around 8 a. m. he hooked a fish on our Beat B2. After an enormous hard fight he was able to land a huge cock fish of 16,1kg (35.5 lb) The fish has been caught on a Sawada’s Green Wasp fly and had a lenght of 1,18m

Antti Halila from Finland, a first time visitor as well, choose the opportunity to fish our Upper Gaula Beat which our rotation fishers could fish during the week as additional water. It was the right decision – he caught a nice and fresh salmon of 8,3 kg (18.5 lb).
During the afternoon, Fabrice Bergues has been also up on our Upper Gaula Beat and managed to land a salmon of 9,7kg (21.5 lb).

22nd of June – end of week 25
|
30.06.2008 18:52

|
The last day of the week has been a bit slow, part of the reason is certainly the fact that many of our guests stopped fishing already in the evening before as the are early on Sunday morning. However, Johannes Kahrs caught last evening at 22:30 a very nice fish weighing approx. 12,5 kg / 27 !/2 lb. on a Black & Silver tube fly in our Beat B 1. He released this fish carefully. Manfred Raguse, who used the chance to make a few casts was able to land a small salmon of 4,9 kg (11 lb) on our Beat B2 fishing the last 20 minutes before the change of pools. Unfortunately this fish was bleeding badly and was kept for the kitchen. Finally Donald Mowat caught at 17:30 a medium sized fish weighing 6.7kg/ 14 ¾ lb. in our C2 Beat. This fish was carrying heavy marks of a seal attack and to release it was out of the question.

The fishing this week has slowed down slightly compared with the fantastic previous week 24, but it still was a great week producing a total catch of 36 fish. Impressing is the average of all caught fish until now since the season start which has been until the end of the week 8,7kg (19lb). Also the condition factor of most fish caught during this season so far is very impressing. This years Gaula salmon are in very good shape and it will be interesting to see how the runs will continue. Many running fish are seen every day and there is now a good head of fish spread throughout the whole river system, including the tributaries.
We are looking forward to a new week of great fishing on our water – conditions look exiting…

23rd of June – the new week started
|
30.06.2008 18:56
|
|
The new week 26 started with a water level of 65 at the Frøseth gauge and a water temperature of 11,7 degrees. The first fish of the week has been caught late evening from Hannes Kratzmair from Germany on our Beat B2 on a Highlander tube fly. The fish weighted in with 7,8kg (17 lb) and was heavily marked during a seal attack, the fish was kept as a return would not make sense. Also Ronald Windl from Austria has been successful and caught a salmon of 6,2 kg (13.5 lb) during the night on the Lower Gaula Beat E4.
The weather forecast promised a lot of rain during the next day, but until the morning it has not started to rain and Franz Hochecker, as well from Austria, caught a fish weighing 8,5kg / 18 ¾ lb., measuring 90cm, on our Beat B2 on a Green Highlander tube fly.
|

During the afternoon Dirk Ebeling from Germany, who has just arrived again for a second week of fishing with us, had a good start and was able to land a salmon of 7,3 kg (16 lb) fishing our Beat C1.
In late afternoon the rain started and the water began to rise shortly after.

The water level on the Frøseth gauge this morning at 9 o’clock was at 75 cm, this is prrox. 25 cm above “normal summer level”. The water temperature was 11 degrees.
A Gary Dog tube fly hooked the first fish of the day. Paolo Miurin from Italy caught a salmon of 6,9kg (15 lb) on our Beat B2. His fishing companion Karsten Kruhl from Germany hooked a short time later in the same pool a fish of 6.5kg (14.5 lb). After the change over of pools Ronald Windl from Austria was able to land another fish on Beat B2, his medium sized salmon weighed in at 5,3 kg (11.5 lb).
On our Beat C1 Michael Dahms caught a nice fish of 9,1kg (20 lb).

25th of June – a nice day on th NFC water
|
30.06.2008 19:32

|
During the night Norwegian angler Rune Jensen caught a nice cock fish on our Beat D1 - the salmon weighted in with 9,7 kg (21.5 lb). As a professional cameraman was close by to produce footage for Ronald Windls new DVD about salmon fishing, the whole fight was recorded and we might be able to show a clip of it here on our website at a later stage.
Also Ronald Windl had again a very successful day. He caught 3 fish, 8,5 kg (18.5 lb) on Beat D1, 8 kg (17.5 lb) and the biggest fish weighted in with 11,1 kg (24.5 lb) on our Beat B2. It looks like a lot of good footage was produced for his film.
Michael Dahms caught two fish today, the first on our Beat B2 weighing approx 10kg (22 lb) which he carefully released. The second fish for Michael today, which was caught on Beat D1, was weighed in at 9,0kg (20 lb).
In the afternoon our guest from British Columbia, William J. Harrisson, caught his first Gaula salmon of approx. 7kg (15.5 lb) on our beat C2 on a Green Highlander tube fly and released the fish after a good fight.

26th of June – cold nights on the Gaula
|
30.06.2008 19:37
|
|
The nights on the Gaula are still very cold, which does not really improve the fishing during nighttimes, but our friend Chris Henshaw showed us that even then it is possible to catch fish. Just past midnight he was able to land a nice cock fish of 9,0kg (20 lb) on our Beat D1 on a Black & Green tube fly.
|
Chris with his salmon from Beat D1 - 9,0kg (20lb).

After Frithjof Dietrich from Germany lost earlier this week a big fish after a 30 min fish on Beat B2, he was able to land his first fish of the week this time on the same Beat. The salmon weighing 8,5kg (20 lb) has been the 2nd tagged salmon on our Beats in 2008. Further information about the fish will follow at a later stage. On the evening, Franz Hochecker from Austria caught a nice and fresh sea trout of 2,5 kg (5.5 lb) on our Lower Gaula Beat E2.

Michael Dahms and Kent Håkanson were fishing our Beat B2 and landed 3 fish in the evening. Michael Dahms landed a salmon of 9kg (20 lb) and Kent caught two salmon of approx. 5kg (11 lb)and 8kg (17.5lb), which he both carefully released.
The weather forecast for the next days tells it will rain a lot, we will see if they are right this time…..

28th of June – a slow day on our Beats, but a very big fish lost…
|
03.07.2008 13:55

|
Manfred Heyderer from Austria was able to land a salmon of 6,5 kg (14 lb) on our Lower Gaula Beat E2.
Kent Håkanson and Michael Dahms have been out again, fishing our Beat D2, first Michael hooked a big fish, which he lost after a short while, then it was Kent’s turn: he hooked another fish which he lost after 30 min hard fight, the salmon has been almost landed and he estimated the fish approx. 15kg, but suddenly the hook came of and the fish has been „ long-line-released“.

The new week started with a water level of 70cm at the Frøseth gauge. During rising water because of hard rain during the afternoon, Claude Verstreken caught the first fish of the week - a nice seatrout of 66cm on our Beat A1.

On our Bogen Søndre Beat the party around Hoagy Carmichael from the USA has been successful as well. Chris Patrick landed a salmon of 6,9 kg (15 lb.) and Christopher Russel caught a fish of 10 kg (22 lb.)
In the morning of the 1st of July Roberto Grazzini caught a salmon of 10kg (22 lb.) on our Beat B2. During this night Toby Gray lost a large fish on our Beat D1 which went out of the pool, down the „gauntlet“ with 300 yards backing out. Later on the same day his father Tim Gray was able to land a salmon of 4,5kg (9.9 lb.) on one of our „free for all“ pools. Tim Sparkes from England landed a fish of the same weight on our Beat B1. During the first day the rainfalls were much heavier than the weather forecast had anticipated and the water rose to a water level of 1,30m, which slowed down the fishing. Usually the salmon do not take the flies so well during rising water and as most salmon use the chance to run further up streams most of the pools became more quiet than before the spate when they were full of fish.
|
...our Beats B1 & B2 | |
|
The next day has been very slow, the air temperature went up and the weather changed to very sunny summer weather, which did not improve the fishing. The water dropped quickly back. Anyway - Johan Wallestad from Sweden fished our Beat D2 for a short while and has caught a small salmon of 2kg (4.5 lb.). Chris Patrick from England caught his 2nd fish of 3,7 kg (8 lb) on our Bogen Søndre Beat.
The following day – the 3rd of July should be better on our water. First Kent Håkanson released a salmon of approx. 10kg (22 lb.) on our Beat A1 at noon. Two hours later it was again Roberto Grazzini from Italy who caught his 2nd fish above 10 kg (22 lb.) during this week. His fish weighed in with a weight of 10,5 kg (23 lb) and was caught on our Beat B2. Leo Niemantsverdriet from Holland, caught a small fish of 2.9kg (6.5 lb).
The next night of the 4th of July will be a memorable experience for our Belgium guest Jean Luc Verstraeten. He was able to land, after a hard fight on our Beat D1, a salmon of 8.7 kg (19 lb). The fish was landed 350 m downstream after Jean Luc had to run the „gauntlet“ with the help of our Guide Magnus Beckmann.
|

Our regular guest Jonathan Argent caught the next nice sea trout of 2,1kg/ 4 ½ lb during sunshine on this very warm day on our Beat B2.
The weather has been still very warm and sunny and the forecasts did not promise any rain bevor the next Sunday. The water temperature constantly went up as the last nights has been warm as well. On our Bogen Søndre Beat David Beazly from England released a grilse of approx. 2 kg (4.5 lb.) but the fishing in general has not been as good as it usually is in week 27 on the Gaula.
On the 5th of July Roland Schwan from Germany caught a salmon of 5,1 kg(11 lb) on our Beat B2, also Leo Niemantsverdriet has been successful again and caught a nice salmon of 9,1 kg (20 lb.) on our Beat C2. Jonathan Argent caught a grilse of 1,5 kg (3.5 lb) on our Beat D2. Magnus Beckmann released a fish of approx. 5kg (11 lb) on our Beat D1
A lot og fish have been seen during the week in all of our pools, but the catches have not been so good, there is no doubt, the reason was the high water temperature of up to 19 degrees!!! which we measured on the evening of the 5th of July, but the weather forecast for the following days sounds promising and on the next morning everything looked better – a cloudy sky, colder air and a little bit wind. It was easy to anticipate that this change to colder weather should improve the fishing on the NFC water: It started with a small grilse caught by Shusuke Hirano on Beat A1. Johan Wallestad from Sweden just pulled out his line on beat C2 and a salmon took his fly on his first cast - a nice salmon of 9,1 kg (20 lb.) which gave him an unbelievable fight.
|
Johan with his salmon of 9,1kg (20 lb)
|
Peter Ericson finallly caught a fish of 4,5 kg (10 lb ) after he lost 5 fish this morning!!!
Also Andre Scholz from Germany caught on his first day his first fish- 5,8kg (13 lb) on our Beat C2.
During the afternoon it started to rain heavily and the sky changed into a „black“ colour. Shusuke Hirano caught his 2nd grilse during the afternoon and Marcus Thomasson was able to land two salmon, the first fish of estimated 4,5 kg (10 lb) which he carefully released and the 2nd fish for him this afternoon weighed in at 10.3 kg (23 lb) (picture on the top). Marcus just fished one hour on Beat B2.
We are looking forward to the coming week as the weather forecast promises colder temperatures and the great final weekend with good catches and several lost fish let us hope for a good week 28 on the NFC Beats starting this evening at 8 p. m….
|
|
Week 28 – 6th to 8th of July - very good days on the NFC water….
|
10.07.2008 01:33
|
|
After the weather cooled down last weekend with an immediate positive effect on the fishing on last Sunday stronger rainfalls started resulting in a nice rise of the water level of 70 cm from 0.30 to 1m at the Frøseth gauge. During this rising water first Siegfried Schneid from Munich caught the first fish of the week on Beat C2 - a small salmon of 2,8 kg. Douglas Beveridge fished our Beat D1 and lost a fish after 2 hours fight during the night, the fish left the pool and was lost 400m downstream after he ran the „gauntlet“. Douglas estimated this fish to weigh over 20kg, he said this fish just has been huge!!!
|
|
Manfred Raguse returned this nice sea liced fish measuring 94 cm / weighing approx. 9kg/ 20 lb. His underwater photo shows clearly two sea lice on the upper gill cover and line marks on the head.
On the next morning Jürgen Ruhland from Germany caught a grilse weighing 1,5 kg on our Beat B2 and also Sven Nedved caught a fish with the same size at noon. Manfred Raguse fished Beat D1 just before noon on Monday and carefully released a sea liced salmon measuring 94cm and weighing approx. 9kg/ 20 lb. The fish was caught on a small Green Highlander tube. His underwater photograph of the fish shows clearly some marks on top of the head which occurred whilst he was playing the fish and the line was wrapped around the head. This is often dangerous as the line might cut the gills which fortunately did not happen this time and the fish went back strong and in splendid condition. On the same pool a grilse of approx. 2 kg been released by Stefan Gross in the afternoon. Theo Ripplinger fished with him together and caught a salmon of 5,5kg/ 12 lb. in the afternoon. Also Siegfried Schneid was successful again and caught his 2nd fish of the week, a grilse of approx. 2,5kg/ 5 ½ lb..
We are very happy to see now increasing numbers of grilse included in the catch. After last years shortage of grilse we are now hoping for good grilse runs this season as a indicator of a healthy balance between the different year classes of salmon running the Gaula. Last week there were only a total of 61 grilse registered in the catch statistic on the whole river, but during the last 7 days an additional of 61 grilse were caught. At the moment the reported catch on the whole Gaula River is 2.275 fish weighing a total of 17.603,05kg / 38,814.72 lb which breaks down into 123 grilse, 662 medium sized salmon and impressive 1.490 fish over 7kg/ 15 ½ lb.
Bruce Lindley from England had a good start of his week, he caught at first a fish of approx. 8kg/ 17 ½ lb. on our Beat B2 during the afternoon and later in the evening another nice salmon of approx. 9,5 kg / 21lb.. Bruce released both fish carefully as usual.

Matthias Göhnert has been successful on our Lower Gaula Beat and caught a small salmon of approx. 2,5 kg. His father Gottlieb Göhnert was able to release a sea trout of approx. 2kg later during the night on our Beat C2.
Renate Carlier from Belgium caught a nice small salmon weighing 4,5 kg / 10 lb. salmon on tuesday at 9 p.m. on beat C2. Her husband Jean-Marie commented on the fact that she caught the first fish again that “all is as it use to be…”.
The water is dropping quickly which seems to have a positive effect on the fishing at the moment and almost all pools of the NFC water provide good fishing. During the night a salmon weighing 12,3kg/ 27 lb. (weighed alive) was caught by Douglas Beveridge on Beat C1. Douglas released the fish after a very good fight which lasted 15 minutes. Recalling the fight with the leviathan which he played Sunday evening for two hours and which was never seen, the catch of this 27 pounder was perceived by Douglas as very exciting but not too difficult…

Peter Ericson decided to fish our Upper Gaula Beat (which is “Free for All” at the moment and can be fished by all our guests in addition to the allocated rotation beats) for a couple of hours – a good decision – he caught a fish of 12,0kg/ 26 ½ lb. after a „crazy“ fight where the fish took more then 250m of Backing. He tried to release the fish but sadly the fish could not be re-animated. Short before this happened he lost another very big fish on a pool a bit further down on the same Beat.

On the morning of the 8th of July Andre Scholz caught 2 grilse, the first of approx. 1,5 kg on Beat D2, the 2nd of approx. 2,5kg on Beat B2. Also Magnus Bäckman was able to catch and release a small fish of approx. 2,5kg on Beat D2. Douglas Beveridge caught a fish on our Bogen Söndre Beat weighing approx. 5,5kg and his friend Olivier Devictor was able to catch and release a salmon of 10,2 kg/ 22 ½ lb. later that evening on our Upper Gaula Beat.
|

The next night was good for Andre Scholz, he caught a grilse and two salmon on our Upper Gaula Beat – approx. 1,5 kg, approx. 5,5 kg and a 3rd fish of 6,5 kg. The first two fish were released. Also George Lawrence was able to land a nice salmon during the night on our Beat B2. He estimated the salmon to weigh about 7kg/ 15 ½ lb.. Also Sven Nedved was successful again and released a grilse approx. 2 kg on our Beat C1.
It is getting difficult to report all fish in this time, as the fishing is very good at the moment and our fishers are very „busy“ to register all salmon in our statistics. We also expect more pictures which hopefully were taken during these days. New reports will follow….

Week 28, continued: Dropping water, but still good fishing!

We are proud about are high release quota on our beats on the Gaula. In June 40,1% and in July so far even 65,2% of all caught fish were carefully returned. This is a great percentage of released fish especially for a Norwegian River and it might well be the highest release quota in the whole of Norway. Things have changed in the minds of the anglers who fish with the Norwegian Flyfishers Club. They want to support the wild salmon stocks. We have seen as well worm anglers or spoon fishermen on other beats who were handling caught fish very professional and released them carefully. This will help to increase the number of spawning fish.
The water is still dropping slowly every day, but despite the constant dry weather the fishing is quite good. It has been recently an issue on the lower Gaula in lower water levels that the river was digging on one particular place with the result that clay was washed into the river. This affected the clarity of the water at times, whilst at other times the river was running very clear. Anyway also in the coloured water it is possible to catch fish – but it is necessary to use bright flies in day time with yellow, green or orange colours – at nights black. The sizes of the flies can be chosen a bit bigger as in the middle and upper parts of the river.
At noon of the 9th of July Bruce Lindley showed that it is possible to catch fish on our lower water even when the water is colured. He landed a very beautiful sea liced salmon of 6,2 kg (13.5 lb.), which he released carefully as he always does. He weighs his fish in a „weigh sack“ before he returns it.

During the the day Adrian Kendrick caught three grilse approx. 2 kg (4.5 lb.) the first on Beat B2, the 2nd on Beat B1 and the third on our Lower Gaula Beat E4. At the late evening Hannes Kratzmair caught a nice salmon of approx. 8kg (17.6 lb.) on our Beat C2 and also Theo Ripplinger has landed his 2nd fish of the week. Theo’s salmon from Beat C1 weighted in with 7,5 kg (16.5 lb). Shortly before midnight NFC’s Daniel Stephan landed a salmon of approx. 6,5 kg (14 lb) on our Beat D1, which he carefully released.

Later during the night Andre Scholz caught another fish of approx. 6kg (13 lb.) on Beat D1. Also Marcus Thomasson has been successfull again and caught two fish on Beat B2, he estimated both fish approx. 3,5 kg (7.5 lb.). On the morning of the 10th of July Bruce Lindley was able to land a huge fish on Beat D1 – a cock fish of 14,5 kg (32 lb.) which he carefully released.

Mick Ford from England released a salmon of approx. 8,5 kg (19 lb.) on our Beat A1 during the afternoon. At the evening Hannes Kratzmair caught his next fish, this time on Beat C1, a salmon of approx. 5,5 kg (12 lb.), which has been released as well. Also George Lawrence has been lucky on the same Beat and was able to land a fish of 6,6 kg (14 lb.).
During the night it was again Adrian Kendrick who hooked a fish on our Beat B2, he fighted with the fish 1,5 hours until he was able to release the female fish of approx. 10 kg (22 lb.).
At the moment we still have good fishing on our Beats, even if the water is getting lower and lower, but as the weather forecasts promise we will get a lot of rain during the next two days, so the river will rise again and we look very much forward to the next days on our Beats.

A good start of the week 29 - and a lot of rain on the Gaula-valley
|
23.07.2008 23:56
|
|
On Sunday evening the new fishing week has started with heavy rain falls during the day, so the Gaula rose up to water level of 40 cm at the Frøseth Gauge during the night. The first fish has been caught by Humbert Henzler – his fish was weighed in at 5,3 kg (11.5lb.). Just 20 minutes later Dr. Werner Brinker caught the next nice fish on the same Beat – a salmon of 7 kg (15.5lb).
Prof. Albrecht Eggert has been successful on one of our „free for all“ beats, the Railway Pool. Short before midnight he caught a salmon weighing 8,2 kg (18 lb).
Also our French party around Fabrice Bergues arrived again for another go this season on the NFC water and it did not needed long time to catch the first fish. Fabrice caught a salmon of approx. 10 kg (22 lb.) on our Beat C2 at noon on his first day and released it carefully.

His friend Frederic Andre has been lucky as well and caught 2 fish on our Lower Gaula Beat. The first fish was a grilse of approx. 2,5 kg (5.5 lb) which has been released on our Beat E1a. The 2nd fish was a salmon of approx. 4 kg (9 lb.) from Beat E2.
|

On the next early morning Elias Rodriguez caught a salmon on Beat C2. He estimated the fish approx. 5,5 kg (12 lb) and released the fish.

The 15th of July has been a good day on the NFC- beats, several nice fish have been caught by our guests. For example Regine Eggert has caught a nice salmon of 6,2kg (13.5 lb.) on our Beat C2 and Peter Galler caught on the same Beat on the late evening a fish of 6,5kg (14.5 lb).
NFC’s Lutz Schepers caught a grilse on the Lower Gaula Beat on one of the „free for all“ Beats.
Johannes Kahrs who did return from Berlin for another weeks fishing was able to land two salmon as well. The first fish he caught on Beat D1 and estimated the weight approx. 3,5 kg (7.5 lb.) and the 2nd fish he caught on our Upper Gaula Beat – a salmon of approx. 10kg / 22 lb! Both fish Johannes released carefully. Also Sven Nedved caught a nice fish on the Upper Gaula Beat. His fish weighed in with a weight of 8,5 kg (18.5 lb.). George Lawrence caught on the same Pool a salmon of 4,8 kg (10.5 lb.) Johan Wallestad fished Upper Beat as well and caught two grilse.
The water level did not rise as much as we expected because of the heavy rain all day, but it is on a perfect level and changing between 30 and 60 cm on the Frøseth Gauge, this up and down does affect the fishing quite a bit and we are longing for a constant dropping level, however, in these water level almost all pools on the NFC water are fishing well.
The next day has been slower on the NFC water, but NFC’s Daniel Stephan was able to land a nice sea liced salmon on our Upper Gaula Beat. The fish weighted in with 4,2 kg (9 lb.).
|

During the night Hans E. Wolff from Germany has been successful again and caught a salmon with a weight of 5,5 kg (12 lb.) on our Beat B2. Also Dr. Werner brinker has been lucky again and landed a salmon on our Beat A1, which weighed 6,0 kg (13 lb.)
Also Peter Galler caught a salmon on this day with a weight of 4,5 kg (10 lb.) Our American guests Nicole Darland and her father Michaell were fishing our Beat D1 and Michael was able to release a nice sealiced salmon of approx. 5 kg (11 lb.)
|

Also our french group around Fabrice had a good evening on our Beat C2. Elias Rodriguez caught a salmon of approx. 8 kg (17.5 lb.) and Fabrice Bergues caught a grilse and another salmon of approx. 7kg (15.5 lb.) As usual Fabrice and Elias released their fish carefully.
During the night Hans E. Wolff and Ulrich Kamp fished our Beat D1 and Hans. E. Wolff released a grilse of approx. 2,5 kg (5.5 lb.) and Ulrich Kamp caught a nice salmon with a weighing 5,6 kg (12.5 lb). During the same night Dr. Werner Brinker caught on Beat A1 a salmon with exactly the same weight.
Now the 2 last days of the week have come and it is still raining - the water rises and drops all the time, so it is a bit difficult to be at the right moment on the right spot, but anyway several nice fish are taken every day and many fish showing in our pools. We are looking forward to the next days and we expect a impressive total catch by the end of the week. So far it is not a extraordinary good week but still a really good one…

|
Week 30 and 31 – very hot weather and slow fishing on the Gaula, but a very good start of week 32!!
|
10.08.2008 19:05
|
|
The weeks 30 and 31 has been very hot with temperatures up to 30 degrees, the water temperature was going up to 22 degrees which effected the fishing badly. Anyway, it is just during such difficult periods that the quality of a fishery is verified by the fact that it is still possible to catch fish in the most adverse conditions. So some of our guests managed to land some nice salmon and a number of grilse during these weeks. For example Matthias Ziercke, he caught a salmon of 7,3 kg (16 lb.) or Peter Spittal who caught his first salmon ever on our Bogen Søndre Beat, a nice fish of approx. 5,5 kg (12 lb.)
|
Peter Spittal with his first salmon form our Beat BS1
|
The party around Andrew Bloore fishing our Bogen Søndre Beat did quite well and were able to catch 12 salmon and 5 sea trout during their week, even though the conditions were most difficult salmon fishing conditions.
The catches decreased seriously during this two weeks and the hope was concentrated on some good weather forecasts which promised at least a little rain and colder temperatures but “failed to deliver”.
Week 32 – the promised rain is falling…
On Sunday, the starting day of our new week it began to get colder and during the day it rained and we had colder weather with temperatures about 18 degrees. So our newly arrived fishermen were optimistically greeting the improved conditions. And in fact produced the Monday 12 fish and the following days provided good fishing
Our English guest Graham Wanless had a very good start. He was able to catch and release 7 salmon within 2 days fishing on our beats. In his life he caught just 3 salmon before!!!
Graham’s first fish he landed on our Lower Gaula Beat was a salmon of approx. 6 kg (13 lb.) on the morning of the 4th of August.
|
|
Graham releases his first Gaula salmon from our Lower Gaula Beat E2
During that day he managed to catch three more salmon. At noon he caught a grilse on one of our free for all pools. A bit later during the afternoon he fished our Bogen Søndre Beat BS2 and hooked on his first attempt a salmon of approx. 7.5 kg (16.5 lb.) Just after releasing his personal record fish, he caught another nice fish of approx. 4 kg (9 lb.)
|
|
Graham Wanless with his personal record - a salmon with an estimated weight of 7.5 kg (16.5 lb.)
The 4th of August has been a good day for our English guest Stuart Ray, he caught his personal record as well – a beautiful light coloured fish with an estimated weight of 7.5 kg (16.5 lb.).
Also Heiner Heiartz had a good start on his first time on the NFC water, he landed two salmon and one grilse with estimated weights of 2,5 kg (5.5 lb.), 3,5kg (7.5 lb.) and 5,5 kg (12 lb.)
At the time of writing our water has produced this week over 40 fish so far. More promised rain and still colder temperatures let us hope for the coming days. We will keep you updated!

|
Week 33 - good August fishing on the NFC Beats!
|
20.08.2008 16:08
|
|
Despite water levels dropping quickly back after a nice spate which increased the water flow up to 72 m³/sec. at the Gaulfossen gauge (14th August) after some nice rain, the fishing was quite productive, supported by nice air temperatures around 13 to 18 degrees. Most of the week we had a cloudy sky and some rain. The water temperature was between 12,5 and 15 degrees.
Fish were caught on almost all our pools, which means that the fishing has been good for us on all our Beats, which are spread over the lower, middle and upper Gaula. The first fish in week 33 was been caught by Andre Scholz on our Upper Gaula Beat. The fish carried a tag and weighed in at 9,5 kg (21 lb.) .
|
|
Andre with one of his fish from our Upper Gaula Beat
Emanuele Nodari from Switzerland was successful on his first evening and caught a salmon of 4,5 kg (10 lb) on our Beat C2. Also Karen Cohen from the United States was able to catch her first Atlantic Salmon with a weight of 3,6 kg (8 lb.) on our Beat C2. This fish was very fresh and sea liced as well.
During the week Andreas Grass from Germany was able to land 7 salmon up to 6 kg on our Beats. Also his friend Uli Dorfner caught 3 salmon, both have been fishing our Beats for the first time.
Also Michael Müller from Germany, publisher of the wellknown German website www.fliegenfischer-forum.de fished the first time with us and landed several salmon up to 10 kg /22 lb. during the week.
|
|
Peter with his salmon from our Beat D1, which he carefully released, he estimated the weight of 5 Kg (11 pound)
Experienced angler Andre Scholz who came for his second visit this season, did well and ended up with 11 salmon in 10 days, the largest weighing 13,5 kg (29.8 lb), which was also the biggest salmon of the week from our water.
|
|
Andre with his salmon of 13,5 kg (29.5 lb) from our Upper Gaula Beat
We are very glad that almost all fishermen who were fishing with us this week caught their salmon. So this week ended with 44 fish registered in our statistic. The catch breaks down into a blend of grilse, medium sized and large salmon with grilse in the majority. On another beat in the upper river a large fish weighing 18,2kg / 40.1 lb was caught on the 18th August.
We look forward to the next week which already had a very good start. The weather is still „salmon weather“ and some really nice fish are among the first fish caught. Our guides saw huge numbers of fresh Grilse yesterday on our lower Beats, they should reach the middle parts very soon…We have high hopes for great fishing until the end of the season, for all sizes of salmon! The long term weather forecast could not be any better and it looks like we will have a lot of water during the seasons last week. Given the large numbers of fish in the river it is likely that the fishing will be very good.
Attention: we still have some rods vacant for the last week (24th to 31st of August)at a special offer price: Fishing incl. accommodation in the country house (self catering) would be just EURO 1.250 per rod per week, or if you come with a group of 4 persons the price is only EURO 1.100. Hotel accommodation is available for a little extra costs.
Just give us a call or Email us!!!

Week 34 – a good start of the week…

24.08.2008 12:18
|
|
Week 34 started on Sunday with a nice fish weighing 5,3kg (11.5 lb.) on our Beat D2 for Joachim Ruthman. Regular rod Winfried Holtkamp caught a very fresh and beautifull salmon weighing 4,8 kg
( 10 1/2 lb.) on our Beat C2. Also Dirk Brumund-Rüther, did well on the same evening and caught a salmon with a weight of 8,5 kg (19 lb.) on our Upper Gaula Beat .
|
|
Dirk with his salmon of 8,5 kg (19 lb.)
Several grilse and some larger fish have been caught during the last days, for example by Herbert Smetana, who caught a fish that weighed in at 6,0 kg ( 13 lb) in our Home Pool on a Black and Silver.
Dirk Brumund-Rüther was lucky again as well, and caught his 2nd nice salmon this week. This fish was covered in sea lice and weighed in at 7,5 kg (16.5 lb.) and was caught on E3, one of our free for all pools on the Lower Gaula Beat.
It is astonishing for us to see our new lower Gaula Beat producing 40 - 50% of the total weeks catch so late in the season including some larger fish like the one from Dirk Brumund-Rüther (7,5kg/ 16 ½ lb.) from Beat E3 and the one from Toni Zulauf (7.6kg/ 16.8 lb) from Beat E5. As well Roland Hansmann caught two fish in Beat E5. Johannes Kmieciak caught a very fresh fish weighing 4,5kg /10 lb in Beat E2.

The fishing this week has been a bit slower than in the last two weeks, but the weather fore casts for the coming week are fantastic. From Tuesday early morning it should rain heavy, the Gaula will rise and the fishing should improve a lot just in time for some great final fishing days. This time the anticipated amount of rain will be over 40 mm (!!!) which should be enough to bring the river up to a impressive height which is most welcome after the recent lower water conditions. The locals say that the do expect fantastic fishing for the last days of the season. Let’s hope they are right!
Short notice bookings are welcome, we will provide fishing as well on a daily basis during this last week of the season. You are very welcome and the prospects can’t be better.

Week 35 – the last week of the season 2008
|
02.09.2008 23:09
|
|
The last week started with promising weather fore casts with a lot of rain for the next days. On the last weekend some new guests and friends arrived on the Gaula to enjoy the last week on the NFC Beats. On Saturday evening it started to rain already, so that the water rose over the night around 20 cm. So it did not take a long time until the first fish of the week has been caught. Chris Henshaw managed to land a salmon on our Beat D1, which has been carefully released. Chris estimated the weight of his salmon about 10 kg (22 lb.)
|
|
Chris with his salmon from Beat D1
On Our Lower Gaula Beat E2 Franz Hochecker from Austria caught a nice seatrout of 2,6 kg (5 ¾ lb). The next day was a great day for the well known fly tyer Håkan Norling – on his birthday he landed a female salmon of an estimated weight of 10 kg (22lb.) on our Beat C2, a little bit later he hooked another, even bigger fish – he estimated his 2nd „birthday salmon“ to weigh more than 15 kg (33 lb). Håkon released both fish carefully.
Also Chris Henshaw has been successful again and caught 2 fish on our Bogen Søndre Beat BS1. Chris was able to catch and release a grilse about 2,5 kg (5.5 lb) and a salmon about 5 kg (11 lb). Also Matte Olson from Sweden caught a fish which weighted in with 5kg on our Beat D2.
Johannes Kmieciak caught a grilse on our Lower Gaula Beat E2 and Marcus Thomasson has been successfull on our new Upper Gaula Extension Beat and was able to catch and release a coloured salmon estimated about 4,5 kg (10 lb).
|
|

Marcus with his coloured salmon, which he carefully released after taking this picture..
During this night it started to rain heavily. It rained so much that the water rose to the next afternoon up to over 2m at the Frøseth Gauge!! (over 500 m³/ sec.). The water was quite coloured until noon, but this is hardly ever a hindrance on the Gaula. However, most of our fishing guests fished not before the evening when it started to clear up again. The next morning the water started to drop again. This rise should bring a lot of new fish in the river, that was clear for everyone, so it was no wonder that our Norwegian guest Jon Anders Schei from Norway hooked a nice fish in our Beat D1. Jon Anders released this salmon, which he estimated to weigh about 11kg (24 lb). This day should be a good day on our water, so there have been several nice salmon been caught, for example another salmon about 11 kg (24 lb) from Franz Hochecker and a 2nd of approx. 10kg on our Lower Gaula Beat E3, both fish were carefully released. Michael Blanca caught a salmon of 6,6 kg (14.5 lb) and Marc Wardel a fish of approx. 5 kg (11 lb) both fish from our Beat D1, also Olivier Plasseraud from France caught 2 salmon on our Beat B1, the first fish about 4kg (8.5 lb) the 2nd he estimated about 5,5 kg (12 lb).

The last 2 days of the season provided good fishing on our Beats during dropping water to a normal level. Olivier Plasseraud managed to land another big fish in the end of the season as well, this time he caught and released the fish on our Beat A1 and wrote in our list approx. 13,5 kg (30 lb) with a lenght of 1,10m. If you have a look on the picture, you will see the salmon was definitely not overestimated...( you might remember, Olivier was the one who caught the approx. 17,5kg (38.5 lb) salmon during the first week of the season 2008…).
|
|
Olivier with his big fish from our Beat A1
Later on the evening Olivier caugth another fish on our Beat BS2, estimated about 7kg (15.5 lb). Also Marc Wardle had a good day with a fish of approx. 5 kg from our Upper Gaula Beat and a 2nd fish of approx. 7.5 kg ( 16.5 lb ) from Beat A1, both fish from Marc has been released as well. Michael Blanca caught also two fish, a grilse and another salmon which an estimated weight of 7 kg (15.5 lb) on our Beat B1 and released these fish carefully.
On the last day Jon Andres Schei caught short before he had to leave a nice salmon on our Beat A1. He estimated his last Gaula salon for 2008 about betwen 6 and 7 kg (14 lb.) Marc Wardle’s last fish has been estimated about 5.5 kg (12 lb) and has been caught and released in the same pool. Marcus Thomasson caught on the last evening a salmon of approx. 3 kg (6.5 lb) on our Upper Gaula Beat.
Per Nyquist from Sweden who came just for the last weekend had a nice last evening and caught and released 3 salmon on our Beat D1, a grilse and 2 salmon each about 5,5 kg (12 lb.)
|
|
Per Nyquist releases one of his salmon on our Beat D1
Franz Hochecker caught the last fish on our Beats- a grilse which weighted in with 2kg (4.5lb).
There have been caught several more fish during the week, but all together we are glad to be able to say – the season ended as it began – with great fishing on the NFC Beats!!!
You are very welcome to book in for next season 2009 – we already started to book in for the next Gaula summer….just give us a call or Email us
