BROWN TROUT AND GRAYLING

River Itchen Abbots Worthy Beat

The River Itchen is considered by many anglers from around the world to be one of the best chalk streams in England. The Itchen arises as the Titchbourne Stream near New Cheriton. North of New Alresford then two more streams, the Alder and the Candover Brook, are added, from here it is called River Itchen and flows from here towards Southampton, where it flows into the ocean. The total length of the river is around 45 km. The river is particularly known for its high water quality, great fly fishing and an almost complete wild trout population.

MAY FLIES AND CADDIES

The Beat

The Abbots Worthy Beat is located on the Upper Itchen and is a little over 500 m long. The beat can sometimes be fished from both sides, but sometimes only from one side. In addition, wading is possible in some places. It is a very demanding fishery, because both casting and fishing for the shy fish in the crystal clear water is not that easy. There is a very high incidence of insects, especially during a large hatch, so first-class fishing can be experienced.

LOCATION

Close to the village Abbots Worthy

The Abbots Worthy Fishery is on the outskirts of the village of Abbots Worthy, about 3 miles north of the city of Winchester. In Abbots Worthy and the adjacent Kings Worthy there are a few shops for shopping and a post office. In nearby Winchester you will find a wide range of shops, cultural and leisure facilities as well as many restaurants and bars.

Getting here is extremely easy via the A33, A34, A303 and M3, whether you are coming from London, the south coast, Oxford or the west of the country. You can also get to Winchester by train from London Waterloo, for example.

Details

The River Itchen is described by many anglers from all over the world as one of the best chalk streams in England and, like the Test, called the “crown jewel” of UK trout fishing. The total length of the river is around 45 km. The Itchen is particularly known for its high water quality, great fly fishing and an almost completely wild trout population.

The Abbots Worthy Beat is located on the outside of the village of Abbots Worthy, about 3 miles north of the city of Winchester. Getting there is easy, whether you come from London or other parts of the country. You can also easily reach Winchester from London Waterloo by train, for example. The Abbots Worthy Beat is located on the Upper Itchen and is just over 0.5 km long. Part of the beat can be fished from both sides. In addition, wading is possible in some places. It is a very challenging fishery, because both casting and fishing, for the shy fish in the crystal clear water, is not that easy. There is a very large number of insects. During a large hatch, you can experience first-class fishing. It is only fished with the dry fly or the nymph upstream. In addition, all fish must be carefully released on this beat.

The large number of insects and the abundance of scuds in the river create an excellent habitat for the fish. Mayflies hatch in late April and peak from early May to late June. It is precisely at this time that the famous mayfly hatch takes place. As with the Test, this is a fantastic experience.

The beautiful summer evenings are also great for dry fly fishing and you can catch really big trout even on the sunniest, hottest days. Numerous insects hatch in autumn and make for excellent dry fly fishing. From summer to autumn, around half of all fish are caught with the dry fly. This includes grayling of almost 1.5 kg! The season starts on April 3rd and ends on October 15th. The best and therefore premium-priced time is the May fly season from May 15th to June 8th. But even in the lower priced weeks you will experience unforgettable fishing here.
