Why does a “exclusive fishing on the Gaula” offer the best possible chances of catching Atlantic salmon? Almost all fly fishermen try their hand at a salmon river at some point. It’s probably the fascination, the challenge outwit one of these majestic fish with a fly at least once in a lifetime.
When preparing for your trip you should pay attention to a few things, because very often we hear from disappointed fishermen about what they have experienced on previously fished beats.
Manfred Raguse shows right after breakfast, how he catches 4 large Atlantic salmon on the Gaula. Sometimes salmon fishing can be so easy. Terry Oldfield filmed Manfred on the NFC Beats and added the music.
Salmon fishing has its price. Nowadays you won’t find any bargains that don’t have a tick hidden somewhere. When the price is very low, there is usually something wrong with it! Many sections of the river are not suitable for fly fishing. Only pools with certain characteristics are suitable for fly fishing for salmon. Once you have found a beat that is suitable for the fly, the next problem often arises – too many fishermen at “your” pool. If ticket prices are cheap, then this is usually because they are issued in unlimited numbers and then it is sometimes necessary to stand in line and wait for your turn.

… or rather in contrast: the NFC beats on the Gaula. What do you like better?

The NFC has leased some of the best fly fishing pools on the Gaula for many years and with an extensive rotation fishery offers you the best chance of catching a salmon. Here only two guests fish one beat and after 6 hours the beat is changed. Because the beats are spread over much of the river and include pools of different characters, you’ll be fishing pools that are perfect for the current water level every day. The rotation also includes beats below the Gaulfossen, so that you have the chance to fulfill your dream of Atlantic salmon even with high and cold water levels early in June.

We keep hearing that salmon fishing on the NFC beats is expensive, but is that really the case? Fishing here may cost a bit more, but the chances of catching are significantly higher due to the low fishing pressure and there is also something for the smaller budget. In addition to a good ascent, being able to present the fly first is crucial for success when fishing for salmon. On cheap stretches with many fishermen you have to be extremely lucky to be the first fisherman to be able to serve a salmon a fly after a fishing break or a change of location. In a nutshell, when you’re fishing for salmon, you’re paying for “unfished water,”. In other words, with “exclusive fishing” you have a far greater chance of fishing unfished water and such fishing is far superior in terms of opportunities to catch salmon. On heavily fished stretches, the chances for the individual fisherman decrease rapidly.
The later weeks in August (from NOK 14.500 / approx. € 1.400/ GBP 1185 (in a country house) cost only about half as much as the prime time weeks (NOK 29.900 / approx. €2.900/ GBP 2450 in a country house). Here you can enjoy the same exclusivity as in the significantly more expensive prime time, but at a significantly lower price.
If you look at the ever increasing weekly prices in Iceland and Canada, then even the prime time weeks in the NFC Lodge with full board (43.900 NOK / approx. 4.200 €/ GBP 3590) are relatively cheap. Here, too, the price for the weeks in August drops significantly. The weekly price in the lodge with full board starts from NOK 23.500 / approx. € 2.300/ GBP 1925.
