On 1 June 2024 at midnight, the eagerly awaited new season on the Gaula began with a water flow of just 95m³ per second and a water temperature of 7.3° C. These almost ideal conditions had enabled the fresh running salmon to ascend into the middle beats of the Gaula early on. The classic upstream barrier at the Gaula in high and cold water, the Gaulfossen, did not prevent the salmon from continuing their ascent this year. As a result, a significant proportion of the catch, totalling 32 salmon weighing up to 12.8 kg on the first day, was landed in the beats above the Gaulfossen.

Thomas Junker mit 9kg Lachs an der Gaula

Thomas Junker with his salmon of 95cm length and a weight of 9kg, caught on 1 June 2024 at 1:15 am in the Bridge Pool of the International Flyfishers Club. This fish was the third salmon caught on the Gaula in the 2024 season.

Christian Moen caught the first salmon of the season on the Gaula in Stören at 0.15am. This fish took a fly and weighed 8.0kg. The second salmon of the season, also on a fly, was caught by Roald Dahl jr. at 0.30 am in Rognes. This fish was 103cm long and was released. Just three quarters of an hour later, Thomas Junker landed a bright salmon measuring 95cm and weighing 9kg in the International Flyfishers Club Bridge Pool. In the same pool, Manfred Raguse landed a salmon 103cm long and weighing approx. 11.6kg on a fly at 5.30pm. This fish was also gently released. The Norwegian Flyfishers Club line also produced a salmon weighing 10.2kg on the first day.

The largest salmon landed up to 5 June weighed 13.9kg and the average weight of the largest 5 salmon landed was 13.1kg. A total of 91 fish with a total weight of 699.8kg had been caught by 5 June. These had an average weight of 7.7kg.

Manfred Raguse am Bridge Pool mit 11,6kg Lachs

Manfred Raguse with a salmon of 103cm length and a weight of approx. 11.6kg, also caught and carefully released in the Bridge Pool of the IFC on 1 June. This fish is no. 23 of the salmon caught on the Gaula this year.

The constantly falling water level dropped to 42.8m³/sec by 5 June and a long period of rain will significantly improve the water level and fishing prospects. At 1 o’clock at night, the water level had already reached 280m³/sec. The djungel drums are already reporting further catches in the NFC Beats up to 14.0kg and at the IFC another fish of 11.5kg was caught in the Bridge Pool.

If you still want to fish the Gaula this season, there are still good opportunities, including at the IFC in top week 27 and at the NFC a rod has just become available in top week 28.

Attention please: those who book rods at short notice this year also have the right to pre-book again next year. Please contact Manfred Raguse/ International Flyfishers Club immediately on +49-172-4266036, or e-mail raguse@internationalflyfishersclub.com
