BROWN TROUT, RAINBOW TROUT AND GRAYLING
River Test Kimbridge Beat
The River Test is considered the most famous chalk river in the United Kingdom. It is the longest chalk river with a total length of approximately 63 km from its source in Ashe to its confluence with the sea in Southampton. In addition to the rainbow trout and the brown trout, there are also grayling in this beat. Fishing for trout is only allowed with the dry fly or the nymph. The fly may only be presented upstream.
MAY FLIES AND CADDIES
The Beat
The “Ginger Beer” beat is a figurehead for the River Test and is one of the best beats on the entire river. This beat has a long history going back to the “Domsday Book” which dates back to the 11th century. This very productive beat is a little over 500m long and has a medium flow rate. The beat starts with a very deep pool and then becomes significantly shallower. Aside from the upper pool, you can see the bottom of the river almost everywhere, and with it the fish that this beat is holding.
The fishery has an equipped thatched fishing hut with a well-tended lawn in front of it. The very beautiful and private location makes this beat an excellent destination for smaller groups.
LOCATION
Fishing in the lower beat
The village of Kimbridge is located between the two towns of Romsey and Stockbridge, right on the River Test. This area is known as the “Middle Test” and is one of the best sections of the river. The fishery is accessed via a private road that takes you to a private car park.
RIVER TEST
Home of modern fly fishing
The river is considered the home of modern fly fishing and its high quality fishing made the river world famous. Its calcareous water and the many underwater plants offer an ideal habitat for trout and grayling. But it is also home to Atlantic salmon.
SEASON
The trout season starts on April 3rd and ends on October 15th. The most popular, best and most expensive time starts on May 15th and ends on June 8th. This is the absolute prime time for mayfly fishing. But don’t worry, even outside of this time you can experience fishing that you will not soon forget!
