Following a mid-term assessment of salmon stocks, the Norwegian Environmental Protection Agency has decided not to introduce any new regulations for salmon fishing this season. Historically strict rules were introduced at the beginning of this year, and the effect remains to be seen. Catches in most of the rivers for which we have data are lower this year than the catches in the period 2016-2019; however, catches are higher than in 2024 in the comparable period.  This applies to southern and central Norway, for northern Norway it is still too early to draw conclusions.

Catches in the research nets in the Trondheim Fjord in Agdenes are about a third below the average for the period 2016-2019; however, catches of large salmon are significantly better than in 2024, while catches of medium-sized salmon are only slightly better. The catches of grilse even exceed the average for the period 2016-2019, which means good prospects for the runs of medium-sized salmon up to 7kg/ 15lb next year.

Since the start of the season on 1 June until today (6th July 2025), 1,164 salmon weighing 7,064kg/ 15,576 lbs have been caught on the Gaula. (40.3% large salmon over 7kg/ 15 ½ lbs, 36.6% medium-sized salmon from 3-7kg (6 ½ – 15 ½ lbs) and 269 grilse up to 3kg/ 6 ½ lbs).  Of these, 546 were caught in the last week alone, which shows a clear improvement in the salmon  runs  in the last week. Of the total catch, 1,040 salmon were released. It should be noted that the number of fishermen has almost halved this season, partly because pot fishermen are not fishing, or are fishing less due to the new strict restrictions.

Last week at the International Flyfishers Club in the Bridge Pool Beat some fish up to 14.9kg were caught, while medium-sized salmon between 5-7kg dominate. A good number of good fish have been landed on the beautiful stretches of the Norwegian Flyfishers Club. If you would like to come salmon fishing on the Gaula this season, please contact us as soon as possible by e-mail: info@internationalflyfishersclub.com or phone +49 1724266036.
